Turkish Seafood: A Rising Star in the Global Market

Türkiye is graced with prodigious coastlines along the Aegean, Mediterranean, Marmara and Black Seas, not to mention its inland lakes and rivers. Therefore, Turkish cuisine and Food culture prominently feature fish and seafood. Whether enjoyed in seaside taverns or family gatherings, the reverence for fish and seafood reflects not only Türkiye's maritime heritage but also its commitment to vibrant and flavorful cuisine.

Over the past two decades, Turkish entrepreneurs brought the world's most modern and integrated facilities in the aquaculture sector to our country. These high - tech facilities have positioned Türkiye as one of the major exporters of protein-rich aquatic products to over 100 countries. By 2023, Türkiye's aquaculture sector achieved an impressive export volume of $1.6 billion, showcasing its significant growth and global reach.

The Aegean Sea is home to a wide range of fish species and among the largest seafood suppliers to the rest of the world. Sea Bream, Sea Bass, Turkish Salmon, trout and bluefin tuna lead the country’s aquaculture export market. Türkiye is also the world leader as an exporter of these commodities. Several fish species are highly regarded and prized in the Aegean region due to their taste, texture, and culinary versatility.

Fish cultivated in the pristine blue waters off the coasts of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas boast of high nutritional value and substantial health benefits. The clean and nutrient-rich aquatic environment contributes to the growth of healthy androbust fish, such as sea bream and sea bass, enhancing their nutritional profile.

In 2023, the sea bass was at the top of the aquaculture exports from Türkiye with an amount of 517 million dollars. While our sea bream export was 371 million dollars in the 2022, it increased to 417 million dollars in the same period of 2023. Our trout export also reached at 112 million dollars in 2023. Developed after the R&D studies of the Turkish aquaculture industry in recent years, Turkish salmon with Omega-3 storage, which is more delicious and satisfying than Norwegian salmon, reached 376 million dollars with an increase of 9 percent in the 2023 and became the star of aquaculture export. In 2023, 63 thousand tons of salmon was sold to 52 countries from Türkiye.
